Velden shrugs. "I still think you have potential. Try not to think of your lack of starblood as a negative thing. Plenty of men and women in Rhystahn's history have done great things without a speck of starblood. Rildan and Cyrus are great examples."

"Rildan might be dead," you say. "And Cyrus worships the Stars."

Velden shrugs. "I never said you'd be perfect...or alive." He winces. "Embrace your humanity and find your strengths without magic."

I raise my eyebrows.

His grin falters. "And do it quick, before Sylmar tells you that you failed."

Velden sighs. "You have starblood, but not enough to receive a starlock to enhance your magic. Remember those awkward adolescent years when you could manipulate the energy around you? Those skills briefly flared, but without a starlock to enhance your magic, the power faded and now lies dormant."

You bite your lip. You'd figured that's how this would go, but that doesn't make it any less disappointing.

"Remember," Velden continues, "no matter what Sylmar says, this is NOT a failure. It's becoming more and more common as fewer half-lights experience Awakenings. Instead, you'll want to develop the skills you have control over, like intelligence or brute strength."

His smile is genuine, and despite being the bearer of bad news, you can't hate him for it. Still, the sorrow of it sticks with you all day and well into the next moon. 

Starlocks aren't the only source of power. If you can't get past this loss, you could always resort to blood magic...
